The Taxback team will ensure you declare the correct residency status once you arrive in Oz. You will either be a non-resident or a resident for tax purposes; it will depend on various factors. The main requirement to be deemed a resident for tax purposes is that you have continuously resided in Australia for a period of 183 days (6 months).
If you have enrolled in a course that lasts for less than 6 months, and you intend to leave right after you finish, you will be considered nonresident for tax purposes. If you are considered a nonresident you are still required to lodge a tax return. However, you won’t be able to claim the tax-free threshold of $18,200 and a higher tax rate applies onto your earnings.
Initially, no, but you can apply for permission to work once your course has started. You can potentially work for a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time and unlimited hours outside term time.
Yes, you will have to pay tax on the income you earn while in Australia. The good news is that the majority of international students in Australia are entitled to claim a tax refund at the end of the year.
Yes, anybody who works in Australia needs to file a return at the end of the financial year regardless of income earned. This obligation applies especially to international students who earn income in Australia. Many international students can be daunted by the prospect of filing a tax return. But the good news is that, by filing your tax return you can claim your tax back! You can also ensure that your tax affairs are in order and this will be important when applying for a future Australia visa.
By not filing, you risk incurring fines and penalties from the ATO. You will also miss out on your tax refund – and this can be a lot of money. The average Australian tax refund a Taxback customer claims is AU$2,600.
Do you really want to leave that kind of money behind? Of course not!
The Australian financial year runs from 1 July until 30 June every year. The deadline to file your tax return and claim your tax back is 31 October. But don’t worry too much if you miss the deadline, you can get extra time to file your return if you file with a tax agent like Taxback!
Taxback will help you claim to get back as much overpaid Australian tax as legally possible.
Exactly how much you will be able to claim will depend on a number of factors such as:
- Your earnings
- How much tax you paid
- How long you worked for
- Study-related expenses you incurred
- Whether you set up your life in Australia or ‘jobbed’ around
Student visa holders are not required to declare their foreign income or be taxed on it. You only need to report any income earned in Australia.
Superannuation (super) is a system for employees in Australia to gather enough funds to replace their income in retirement. If you earn over $450 a month in Australia your employer is legally obliged to pay 9.5% of your basic earnings into a superannuation fund for you.
You can only claim your Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (superannuation refund) when you have left Australia or your visa has expired. The average superannuation refund is AU$1,908.
Yes, you can claim back on the following:
- Course fees
- Stationery and textbooks
- Student union fees
- Repairs to educational equipment such as computers
- Car expenses
To claim your course-related expenses we’ll need receipts or proof of payment. Make sure you send these into us with your other forms and documents. If you’ve got questions then email us at australia@taxback.com.
In order to file your tax return and claim your tax back you will need:
- Your payslips – your final payslip from each job is the most important so keep it safe!
- Work-related expenses – receipts for your Uniform, Work Courses, Tools/Equipment or Car/transport
- Self-education expenses – if you enrolled in a course to support your main activities at work or are required to undertake such to improve your skills and knowledge at your work place, it’s a good idea to keep your statements, receipts or invoices as you may be able to use this as deduction on your return
The easiest way to get your tax back is to file with Taxback. We’ll take care of all the paperwork, transfer your maximum refund straight to your bank account and keep you compliant with the ATO.
Once we have your signed tax documents it takes us just 24 hours to get your Australian tax return ready for the Australian Tax Office.
This includes:
- Reviewing your application
- Estimating your refund
- Completing your forms
- Sending them to the tax office
Once the Australian Tax Office has your application it should take about 2 working weeks to process.
As soon as we get your refund, we’ll transfer it to you without delay.
Don’t panic! We offer a document retrieval service to help you locate your missing documents.
This is the PAYG (pay as you go) form you get from your employer when you finish working for them. It details the amount you earned and the tax you paid. It used to be called a Group Certificate.
Make sure you send it to us when you get it from your employer at the end of June. If you don’t want to wait until then, ask your employer to give it to you when you finish working for them. They might say no but it’s worth asking!
If your employer refuses or you don’t want to wait until June to apply for your refund, we can apply as soon as you send us your final payslip. If you have that, then go ahead and apply now.
Your final payslip is the payslip you receive with your final pay cheque. It shows your total earnings and how much tax you’ve paid for that employer. We can use your final payslip to get your Australian tax back if we’re filing your return at the end of the tax year – as long as it has your year-to-date earnings and tax paid. If you don’t have a final payslip, our document retrieval team can organise a PAYG form for you when the tax year ends.
If you filed an Australian tax return in the last two years and you’re not happy with what you got or were told you weren’t owed a refund, we can look into it for you. We can assess for free if you’re owed a larger refund. If you decide to re-apply, we can file a new return for you.
Our Live Chat team are online 24/7 to support you. Get in touch today.
