To qualify for the healthcare allowance, you must meet the following conditions: 

  • You must have health insurance in the Netherlands

  • You must be a Dutch, EU, Liechtensteiner, Norwegian, Icelandic or Swiss national, or have a valid residence permit

  • You must not earn more than the income threshold (€37,496 in 2024)

  • Your savings or investments must not exceed the threshold (€140,213 in 2024)

  • You must be 18 or older

Income requirements to claim the healthcare allowance 

If you meet the following income requirements, you may be eligible to claim the healthcare allowance for your medical insurance in the Netherlands

2024 income requirements

  • For the 2024 tax year, your annual income must be less than €37,496. If you have an allowance partner, your income must be less than €47,368 per year 

  • For the 2024 tax year, your savings and investments combined from the Netherlands and abroad must not exceed €140,213 if you claim individually. If you claim jointly, they must not exceed €177,301

2023 income requirements

  • For the 2023 tax year, your annual income must be less than €38,520. If you have an allowance partner, your income must be less than €48,224 per year 

  • For the 2023 tax year, your savings and investments combined from the Netherlands and abroad must not exceed €127,582 if you claim individually or €161,329 if you claim jointly

How much is the healthcare allowance in the Netherlands? 

How much healthcare allowance you are entitled to claim will depend on your earnings. 

In 2024, the maximum healthcare allowance you can claim is €123 per month for a single individual. 

If you have an allowance partner, you can jointly claim a maximum healthcare allowance of €236 per month. 

For the 2023 tax year, the maximum amount you can receive is €154 or €265 per month if you have an allowance partner. 

It’s important to report any changes in circumstances, such as changes in income, family status, etc.

For instance, if you want to apply for zorgtoeslag for the 2023 tax year, you have until 1 September 2024 to claim it.
