If you worked in any of these countries, you could be due a Tax Refund

Still not got your Irish tax refund? Here’s why you may not have received it yet

#TaxTipsIreland

Applying for Irish tax refunds can be tricky at the best of times.

However, this can be amplified when you think you have successfully applied for a tax rebate, but you have not heard back from Revenue.

While some people may face delays receiving refunds, if you have not heard anything in months, there could be a different reason why you have not been issued with it yet.

Let’s dive into some of the reasons why you have not received your tax refund, as well as finding out the most effective way to claim Irish tax back!

You may have tax obligations from previous years

If you incorrectly filed a tax return in a previous tax year, this could be one of the reasons you have not received the refund that you are due.

Remember, Revenue takes these matters very seriously, and may not issue you with a tax refund if an outstanding issue still needs to be addressed.

If you have filed a tax return for a previous year, and have an understatement (owe tax), they are unlikely to issue your tax refund until you have cleared your liability

However, a good way to offset any tax understatements is by availing all of your tax reliefs and credits

When you apply for an Irish tax refund with Taxback, we will ensure you receive every last cent that you are due back!

You earned income as a self-employed worker and did not file

You earned income as a self-employed worker and did not file

If you earned income as a self-employed worker under the self-assessed system in Ireland, you need to file a tax return.

The correct tax form you need to file is Form 11.

You will not receive your refund until you complete this.

Revenue is awaiting proof of your claims

There are a variety of reliefs and credits you can claim on your Irish tax return.

These include dental, remote working, medical, and tuition expenses.

However, if you do claim these expenses, there is a small chance Revenue will select you for an audit, in which case you will need to provide evidence of these expenses in the form of receipts.

So, if you incur work-from-home costs, ensure you hold onto those heating and internet bills!

I have already applied for a refund but have more expenses. Can I add them to my tax return?

This is a common occurrence that our tax experts come across.

Put simply - yes, you can add expenses to your tax return if you forgot to claim them.

This can be done by amending your tax return.

Better yet, you could leave it to our team of tax professionals who will ensure you claim everything relevant to you!

There may be delays on Revenue’s side

While you can usually expect to receive any tax refund you apply for within ten working days, there are some exceptions.

At busier times of the year, Revenue experiences backlogs due to high volumes of tax returns needing to be processed.

These times include January and October, the start of the new tax year and the self-assessed tax return deadline respectively.

However, if you are waiting over a month for your tax refund, there may be something wrong with your application, and you should consider if you fall into the above brackets.
